There’s no denying that winter can wreak havoc on your skin. The cooler months see us spending a lot more time inside at home and at work, usually with the heater pumping out hot, dry air on our skin all day. When we do venture outside, our poor skin then has to contend with the cold, dry winter winds. This hot-and-cold combination can quickly irritate our skin and weaken its outermost layer, leading to dryness, redness and rashes.

Research shows that adequate vitamin D levels are essential for maintaining healthy skin cell growth and repair, supporting the skin’s immune system and fighting free radical damage. So, it’s no wonder your skin can look a little dull, dry and tired during winter!

But there are some easy ways you can ensure your skin is protected and nourished – both inside and out – this winter. Try to incorporate a few of these tips into your daily routine and your skin should be back to its usual healthy, glowing self in no time!


 1. Turn down the heat

Sure, there’s nothing better than a steaming hot shower on a cold winter’s night. But, unfortunately, this is one of the worst things you can do for your skin. Hot water strips away your body’s natural oils and can damage your skin’s protective barrier, leaving you feeling dry, tight and irritated.

Try to only bathe in warm water during winter and cut down your shower time to about 5 to 10 minutes per day. Make sure you use a gentle, moisturizing bodywash too and avoid harsh soaps which can further irritate your skin.


2. Moisturize every damn day (and don’t forget SPF!)

Keeping hydrated is essential for healthy skin. While drinking plenty of water helps to hydrate our skin from the inside, it’s also important to give your skin an extra hydration boost on the outside. Applying a restorative moisturizer or natural oils can help to nourish your skin and maintain its protective barrier. If your skin is prone to blemishes or acne, be sure to look for non-comedogenic formulas. The best time to lather up and lock in moisture is straight after you shower while your skin is still damp as the moisturizer will absorb more effectively.
