There’s no denying that winter can wreak havoc on your skin. The cooler months see us spending a lot more time inside at home and at work, usually with the heater pumping out hot, dry air on our skin all day. When we do venture outside, our poor skin then has to contend with the cold, dry winter winds. This hot-and-cold combination can quickly irritate our skin and weaken its outermost layer, leading to dryness, redness and rashes.
Not only that, but more time spent indoors means our natural vitamin D intake from the sun drops. Research shows that adequate vitamin D levels are essential for maintaining healthy skin cell growth and repair, supporting the skin’s immune system and fighting free radical damage. So, it’s no wonder your skin can look a little dull, dry and tired during winter!
But there are some easy ways you can ensure your skin is protected and nourished – both inside and out – this winter. Try to incorporate a few of these tips into your daily routine and your skin should be back to its usual healthy, glowing self in no time!
1. Turn down the heat
Sure, there’s nothing better than a steaming hot shower on a cold winter’s night. But, unfortunately, this is one of the worst things you can do for your skin. Hot water strips away your body’s natural oils and can damage your skin’s protective barrier, leaving you feeling dry, tight and irritated.
Try to only bathe in warm water during winter and cut down your shower time to about 5 to 10 minutes per day. Make sure you use a gentle, moisturizing bodywash too and avoid harsh soaps which can further irritate your skin.
2. Moisturize every damn day (and don’t forget SPF!)
Keeping hydrated is essential for healthy skin. While drinking plenty of water helps to hydrate our skin from the inside, it’s also important to give your skin an extra hydration boost on the outside. Applying a restorative moisturizer or natural oils can help to nourish your skin and maintain its protective barrier. If your skin is prone to blemishes or acne, be sure to look for non-comedogenic formulas. The best time to lather up and lock in moisture is straight after you shower while your skin is still damp as the moisturizer will absorb more effectively.
Don’t forget to use SPF every day too – even if you work indoors. While the weather may not be hot and sunny, you still need to protect your skin from sun damage caused by harmful UV rays.
3. Get a daily vitamin D boost
As the colder weather sees us spending less time outside in the sunshine, our vitamin D levels may take a hit during winter. Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to skin disorders, such as psoriasis, acne and rosacea, and can also lead to fatigue, poor bone health and muscle pain.
If you’re feeling a little stuck inside this winter and need an extra vitamin D boost, you can increase your intake by adding Tremella mushroom extract into your daily routine. Tremella is loaded with vitamin D and rich in antioxidants to fight free radical damage. It also contains polysaccharides which stimulate enzymes that support the effects of anti-ageing and improve overall skin health.

4. Healthy skin needs a healthy gut
Our skin is our largest organ and it is inextricably linked with every other system in our body – especially our gut. Our gut health plays an integral role in our skin health, and you simply cannot have one without the other. Research has found that poor gut health can be linked to many chronic skin diseases, such as eczema and psoriasis, and may even lead to premature ageing.
The best way to support your gut microbiome is by eating a healthy, nutrient-dense diet, rich in prebiotic and probiotic foods. Prebiotics and probiotics help to feed the good bacteria within your gut and encourage microbiome diversity. When your gut is in good health, it is able to support the healthy functioning of the rest of your body and, in turn, deliver your skin all the essential nutrients it needs to thrive.
5. Use a humidifier
Did you know there’s a super simple way you can support your skin health overnight? In fact, it’s so easy you can do it in your sleep! Using a humidifier beside your bed during the colder months helps to add much-needed moisture back into the air and saves your skin from winter dryness.
If you spend a lot of time working in an office in air conditioning, you can also pop your humidifier on your desk while you work to help restore your skin’s moisture levels throughout the day.
